How We Handle Your Crisis
In a nutshell: As carefully as you do.
Many of our clients have experienced immediate or same day response to unexpected situations. In Information Technology, weekends and evenings are commonly scheduled for critical computer maintenance and upgrades. Interruptions to scheduled events aren't uncommon. We habitually do everything we reasonably can to handle your crisis as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, here's some pointers to help you steer through some of the worst problems.
Data Lost but NOT deleted?
If you're sure it's there SOMEwhere, there's help to be had in finding it. First try Microsoft's search (Start / Search) it's slow, but if you know the filename, or part of it, it'll find it. If that's too slow, or if you only know something "inside" an email, pdf, or other file, get Google Desktop. It'll need an hour or more to index everything on your disk, but it'll be able to find every occurrence of a word or phrase.
Data Lost - File deleted?
It may still be available to be restored... but every moment your PC is on diminishes the likelihood of success. PC's constantly create temporary files, while browsing, printing, word processing, etc. any one of which could be overwriting your recently deleted file. If you have an "un-delete" program, run it immediately. If you don't have one already installed on the disk drive, it's best to turn the PC off, (power-off, not shutdown) and bring it in. If you want to be prepared, and have an undelete program ready, there are free downloadable programs available, don't bother buying a big expensive toolbox or utilities program, they're dangerous and bloated.
Internet Connection Down?
For the most common configuration: Cable or DSL modem plus a router, print this document and keep it handy: Your Network Is Fussy.PDF
If you don't have a router, you should, meanwhile, follow the same steps, just skip any "router" steps.
Sudden slowdown with looming deadline?
There may be some things you can do to ease the pain until there's enough slack time to get the system tuned up.
  • Stop as many programs as you can. Down by the clock in the lower right corner, many of those icons are wasting your time. Right-click on them and exit/stop/hide/shutdown as many as possible.
  • Disconnect from the network. If you MUST have the network, disconnect the Internet if you can.
  • Only if the Internet is off, stop your anti-virus / firewall / other protective software.
  • Lower your video resolution /color depth.
Do-it-yourself Tuning?
There are many programs promising to tune your PC. Here's some advice:
- Be careful which tools you trust. 85% of the tools out there are in fact spyware in sheep's clothing; Whether free or paid for. There's even one advertising on TV that's spyware.
- Don't load everything that comes with the "suite", even the market leading "legit" programs are bloated with features that slow your PC down in order to keep reminding you they are there. Why? To build your "brand awareness" and to provide a false sense of security.
- If you understand what the tool will do, why it should be done, AND if you could do it yourself manually then you'll probably be OK using the tool.
- Lastly, just so you know, the hardest systems for us to clean up, the ones that cost extra time (and $) for performing manual brain-surgery have been "do-it-yourself"'d; frequently by a relative that is a programmer. (If you would trust a podiatrist to do brain surgery... ) 50% of the wipe-reformat-reinstall cases we've had were because of a "utility suite" that ran amok.
Vendor Support Lines and the RESTORE function
If something goes wrong, and you call a support line, it's not uncommon to be told "use SYSTEM RESTORE to restore your computer to an earlier time.
This is a dangerous practice that sometimes works, but can easily multiply your problems.
A System Restore is like going backward in time, and ignoring everything that happened in the interim, it should only be used as a last resort, and only after asking some critical questions about what else you've installed or updated since that date.

Unfortunately, vendor support reps are paid according to how many calls they process per hour, NOT on whether fixing their software problem caused other problems. They have no reason to spend the time asking you enough questions to determine what else might be affected.
If you are experiencing a problem now, it may be the result of a prior restore.
Your Crisis Not Listed?
If we can help you through it in a few minutes, by phone, we will.
If it's after hours and you wonder who to call? We're usually available in the evening.

A: We wouldn't take advantage of your misfortune.
Occasionally, hardware manufacturers or repair facilities (even some of our partners) have to charge extra for FedEx'd parts, or just to have an employee stay late. Our partners waive those fees for our clients when possible.

Q: What short-cuts can you take to rush the job?
A: Usually none.
We do it right the first time, there's no time to do it over.
What we will do, when possible, is reschedule other activies to prioritize your need.
